This year’s Model United Nations Conference from 24-27 July 2014 in Oldenburg (OLMUN) chose no small aim. Yet 720 students from all over the world, even from countries as far away as the USA, Mexico or Russia, followed the invitation to come to Oldenburg and discuss how it could be achieved. Among them, representing the European Union, were two year 11 students from the Schiller-Gymnasium who participated to fulfil part of their CertiLingua requirements: Leonie Kremer and Melanie Reuning. OLMUN took place for the 14th time this year and is organized by a group of students from a number of Oldenburg grammar schools. It is by now the biggest English –language MUN in Germany.

Apart from serious debate on topics like Water Grabbing or the Revision of the UN Millennium Goals, a strict dress code and severe punishments (delegates were forced to sing karaoke or had to stuff as many cookies as possible into their mouths) for being late, the conference also offered a barbeque, a football tournament and a party to relax after the day’s hard work.

In these conferences, participants are assigned a country or organization they represent as delegates to several UN committees. The aim is to discuss a set topic, find partners, solve conflicts and finally pass a resolution that contains a description of the problem as well as measures to be taken to solve it. However, MUN is designed to achieve much more: it teaches debating skills, intercultural communication and knowledge on international politics.
